Nativity
Daniel Harrison

Shadows of the nativity scene

Mixed amongst the red and green

Revealing glory unseen,

Hidden in the world between

It’s not in the new toys

Gifts and games for girls and boys

Revelling in this capricious joy

In mousetraps and horses of Troy

It’s not in the Christmas wreath

Or in the decorations beneath

Nor in the piano teeth

All worthless, as a grassy heath

Can it burn away all this naught

All the gizmos and goodies people sought

I wonder, what God hath wrought,

Because of you, for you have bought

All these lies, wrapped in a bow

Even in this Christmas glow

When I say “Wait!” you say “No”

How far will your desire go?

But there is hope, if you can see,

Right here in the Nativity

No need for presents; nor a tree,

But only thanks for him saving you and me
